Barcode-IT can provide you with the perfect thermal printer for your barcode labelling applications at affordable prices. We will provide you with all the information you need to make an informed choice, avoiding the pitfalls of buying the wrong solution or not making it future proof. Some of the largest organisations in the UK trust us to recommend printer and label solutions, so why not give us a call and see what we can do for your business.

Match the printer to the application

Different applications require different types of printers that have diverse capabilities. Although cost is always a consideration when purchasing a new thermal printer, buying the wrong printer for your application can be far more costly in the long term. Buy a printer that is not robust enough for your operation and you'll end up paying a fortune in maintenance and reduce the life of the printer considerably. Buy a printer that's over specified and you're just wasting money. There are hidden costs associated within barcode label printing that need to be considered before making the decision on which printer to purchase.

Duty Cycle

When we refer to a printer's duty cycle, we are talking about the number of labels that the printer is required to print per day. If you have a busy period at Christmas for example, you printer will need to be able to cope with higher demand in a busy period as well as "normal" print runs the rest of the year. Choosing a printer capable of meeting the demands on your print needs is important, to avoid break downs and stopped production/shipping at critical moments.

Click on the buttons below to see the type of printers we recommend for these applications:

Light Duty Cycle Printers - Prints up to 4,000 labels per day Heavy Duty Cycle Printers - 5000 to 10000 labels per day

What is thermal printing?

Thermal printing uses heat to generate an image on a label or tag, either by using heat to bond ink from a ribbon onto the label (thermal transfer) or using a heat sensitive media to transfer the image directly onto the label (direct thermal).

In direct thermal printing, the printhead comes in direct contact with the face of the media. Thermal media has a heat sensitive coating that
reacts to the heated elements in the printhead, resulting in an image. Thermal transfer technology uses a ribbon image transfer process. The ribbon is coated on one side with a black or coloured heat sensitive coating. This side of the ribbon is against the surface of the print media. The other side of the ribbon is flush against the printhead. The heated elements of the printhead come in contact with the uncoated side of the ribbon, melting the coating off the other side of the ribbon onto the surface of the media.

Direct thermal printing is best used in applications where the shelf life of the label is short. Direct thermal labels are sensitive to both heat and UV light, turning labels black if exposed to these elements for long periods of time. Thermal transfer printing is a longer term print solution with images for indefinite amounts of time, depending on the type of ribbon and label combination used, and labels can be used outdoors, in hot or cold environments, etc.

As Barcode-IT provide the entire barcoding package, we are well placed to advise on the longer term costs of buying a printer and will attempt to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision.
