Success Stories - J Stell & Sons

On the recommendation of Zebra Technologies, Stell approached Barcode-IT in 2009 to provide a despatch label printing solution for their cardboard tube production facility based in Keighley, West Yorkshire.

Barcode-IT recommended NiceLabel software to facilitate the printing of barcoded despatch labels and to integrate with the company's SAP Business One system, ensuring all data on the label is accurate and to avoid any unnecessary manual inputting of data by operators.

"The NiceLabel solution implemented by Barcode-IT makes label printing simple. The solution is robust and being seamlessly integrated with our SAP B1 software means that it really can't fail - it just works!" - Sam Stell, Director at J Stell & Sons.

Stell use Zebra ZM600 printers to produce their despatch labels, which contain information including customer name and address, product code, product description and dimensions. Every box or bundle of cardboard tubes carries a label, which can be adapted to show specific information should a customer so require it.

When a sales order is entered onto the system, SAP B1 generates a text file containing the relevant data, which is passed through to NiceLabel. When the operator calls up the order line, a label is printed from a default Stell label template. The only data that the operator needs to enter is the number of tubes within the box/carton/stillage and the clock number of the operator, which is used for traceability purposes.

As some customers require a variation on the information shown on the label, label templates have been created specific to those customers and SAP automatically concatenates the fields required to populate the label. No operator intervention is required and the seamless integration between NiceLabel and SAP B1 ensures that the labels are produced with the required data and layout.

How It Started

Still a family run firm, the manufacturing facility is based on a 100,000ft sq ft site, which is operational 24 hours a day. Stell pride themselves in being able to manufacture just about any type of cardboard tube with a superb level of quality and service, which gives them a distinct advantage over their competitors.
